Live Music: Jason Wilcox

Jason Wilcox is a New Zealand–based guitarist and vocalist whose playing is grounded in jazz, while comfortably spanning soul, blues, pop, and contemporary styles. Originally from Mississippi, USA, he brings an authentic, roots-influenced approach to his music, shaped by both American and New Zealand performance traditions.

Since relocating to New Zealand in the early 1990s, Jason has established a diverse career as a performer across live shows, theatre productions, and private events. His experience includes work as a bandleader and show guitarist, contributing to a wide range of musical settings that highlight both his technical skill and musical sensitivity.

Alongside his performance work, Jason has a strong background in music education. He spent six years as Head of Guitar and Commercial Music at St Peter’s School in Cambridge and has been involved in teaching and mentoring musicians for many years. His formal training in jazz performance, combined with his practical industry experience, informs a well-rounded and adaptable approach to both playing and teaching.

As a live performer, Jason is known for his smooth vocal style, tasteful guitar work, and ability to tailor his performance to suit the setting - whether delivering laid-back jazz or more upbeat, crowd-friendly material.
